Acclaimed professor of History Ambeth R. Ocampo will be this year’s featured lecturer for the 2025 Adrian E. Cristobal Lecture Series. The event will be on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 3 pm at the Verdure, Henry Sy Sr. Hall, De la Salle University, Manila.
The Cristobal family established the Adrian E. Cristobal Lecture Series in collaboration with the Unyon ng Mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas or the Writers’ Union of the Philippines. It aims to honor the intellectual legacy of the late renowned writer and former UMPIL chair emeritus.
In each lecture, an esteemed Filipino intellectual delivers a keynote speech on a topic related to the country’s current socio-political condition or cultural development. Past lecturers include Gemino Abad (2011), Virgilio Almario (2012), Resil Mojares (2013), Reynaldo Ileto (2014), Solita Monsod (2015), Marites Vitug (2016), Alfred Yuson (2017), Soledad Reyes (2018), Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo (2019), Antonio Carpio (2020), Ninotchka Rosca (2021), Sheila Coronel (2022), Inday Espina Varona (2023), and Leila de Lima (2024).

Ambeth R. Ocampo is the Hermenegildo B. Reyes Professor of History at the Ateneo de Manila University and a distinguished professorial lecturer at De La Salle University. He writes “Looking Back,” the longest-running editorial page column on history for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He has published over 35 books, the most recent being Cabinet of Curiosities: History from Philippine Artifacts (2023).
He served as president of the City College of Manila, president of the Philippine Historical Association, co-chair of the Manila Historical and Heritage Commission, chairman of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
His work has been recognized with three National Book Awards, TOYM Ten Outstanding Young Men in the Field of History, Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas from UMPIL, and the Patnubay ng Sining of the City of Manila. He was conferred the Presidential Medal of Merit and the Order of Lakandula (rank of Bayani/Grand Cross) by the Republic of the Philippines. His foreign awards and honors include knighthoods from the Republic of France and the Kingdom of Spain and the 2016 Fukuoka Academic Prize.
The Adrian E. Cristobal Foundation, UMPIL, and the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center of De la Salle University jointly present the lecture.
